In the last five years we have found this new way of using the digital media, the digital wild and the internet to make our lives more conveinent. Online shopping is one of those tools that have been proven to help us out in terms of getting things done in a faster way, but it has also shown us how to expand our economy, but like most of the newer technologies, it has been a problem for most and has put a burden on our society in terms of people using this going into debt, people having there identities stolen, computer hackers “breaking into homes”. Online shopping has also been a problem, in terms of people not really knowing what they are purchasing, such as clothing not being able to be tried on and not knowing the right sizes, or art and photographs that people think are authentic when they are buying them, are turning out to be copies, and not the real things. Also buying electronics, are being found to be “knock offs” and not work, after they are shipped to the homes of the buyers. While researching not only through the internet, but in my field work, i have spoken to many friends and family members, who at one time were advid online shoppers but have found that one of the biggest problems was the shipment, of the things that they have bought. On arrival of of my good friend Carly’s new i-pod which she purchased on E-Bay.com “was sent in a ripped box, with a cracked screen, and a missing charger.” I have also seen that with shoes from NineWest.com, that my co-worker Karen purchased, they were sent in the wrong color, and then after sending them back once, they had to be sent back a second time for being completly the wrong size, so is online shopping helping or hurting us?

Online Shopping

My topic that I have been researching and reading has been online shopping. I talk about the myths, and problems that people are facing from going into debt, to getting there identities stolen, from online predators. Also I am breaking the mold of the convenience of shopping online rather than shopping in the stores.

Thesis

Although my thesis statement will probably change in the next few days, I so far have this statement, to draw in my readers and show them what my paper is going to be about: “Mall shopping isn’t going to go away, but online shopping is the wave of the future,” states Tomkovick, a scholar himself, and a self proclaimed online shopper. Online shopping in recent years has become a craze like the Beetles, millions flocking to get a glimpse of the latest trends, the best deals and the first to purchase the newest technologies

Main Points

The main points, arguments that I am trying to make in my research paper, is the points that online shopping can be more hurtful to society than helpful. I also go into a little bit of detail on the growth and economic advantages to this new found technology. I also look at the different kids of people that are using online shopping, it is not just a women’s world, men are getting more involved in the “shopping experience”. Online shopping like I state in my paper is causing problems such as debt, credit card fraud, shopping obsessions and much more.

The topic that i am covering and have been writing and researching about is online shopping, the effects, myths, and formal problems that have been arising sinc this fairly new technology has sprung up only a few years ago. i have found many key point as to why people shop online, instead of the conventional shoppers who actually goes into a store to buy the things they need or want. online shopping is a conveinent tool, where you can shop from the privacy of your own home, wearing whatever you want, not having to fight through crowds, or deal with sales people, or fighting for parking spots. although i have found all of these to be examples of all the good things online shopping does, there is also the downfall, people stealing others identity online, hackers breaking into ones computer and purchasing thousands of dollars worth of goods with someone elses money, there is also the issues of still having to deal with the pop ups, and kind of sales people still trying to get you to buy things, and are we becoming that lazy where we dont even have to leave our beds, to go out and shop. i also am goin to focus on the ideas, of americans going into debt, and millions of people signingup for credit cards online and having no idea what they are getting into. my thesis starts out with: “Mall shopping isn’t going to go away, but online shopping is the wave of the future,” states Tomkovick, a scholar himself, and a self proclaimed online shopper. For my final project i am doing the effects of online shopping, how the digital media is creating this new world where you have to be an internet insider to understand this crazy world. i also am going to look at how there is now a problem with online shopping andcredit card debt, people stealing others identity, and compulsive shoppers, not being able to control themselves when it comes to shopping, especially online. while i was searching for pictures about my online shopping ideas, i have found pictures of people going crazy and cutting up thier credit cards, and the severe drop in mall crowds due to the online shoppers. i have also found graphs that have shown the spike in the online industry since it has began only a ffew years ago. now we are looking at a multi billion dollar a year industry. i think that this final project will be a great oppertunity to show how the american people are so obsessed with shopping, and gettign great deals, and being able to shop from the conveince of thier own homes. and thats another thing, i think that we have become so lazy, that the traditional ways of shopping, actually getting out of bed and walking through the mall looking for what we want to buy, seems like it has become a pasttime, is thi ways of shopping adding to the obesity problem in america? where will this end, how far will the online thing go, what will we be able to do online next?

“Do you know we’re all here, waiting for the next segment? Wandering up and down the web all night, looking for where you’ve left it for us? We are. Well not me personally, lately, but that’s because I seem to have followed Parkaboy’s advice and started trying to find another way to hack in. And I guess I have – we have – because we’ve found those codes embedded in the footage, that map of the island or city or whatever it is…I’ve been able to get to this email address, and now I’m sitting in this park, beside the statue of Peter Pan, writing to you…sincerely yours, Cayce Pollard.”

Cayce is 32, her father dies on September 11th, 2001. She found footage and began to follow it. She has a severe allergic reaction to name brands and labels and an in-comprehensive ability to recognize urban trends.
The way that Cayce interacts with the footage is that she follows it and talks to Parkaboy about it and then she began to work with Boone Shu to discover its source (they are both working for Bigend). Also, being a part of the forum gives her a feeling of belonging, and makes her feel like she has a second home.
The reason she interacts is because it gives her something to focus on and gives her a feeling of belonging. She also does it because she is fascinated by how timeless it is, and she is trying to recognize patterns in the footage.
Gitlin says, “The media has been smuggling the habit of living with the media….” This has a lot to do with Cayce and the forum. She constantly is coming back for more of the footage and the media is sucking her in. Cayce sees it as a job but it is her whole life, and that is what she bases her life on. She doesn’t realize that the media is sucking her in, she cannot even get away from it. Todd Gitlin i saying that the media does this to us, and Cayce is a perfectly good example of what Todd Gitlin is explaining. She is living through the “digital world.”

“Remember the whiteout, when they kiss?… Meanwhile, exhausted, baffled, but unhealthily excited, I remain, Parkaboy” (Gibson 170).

Parkaboy is Cayce’s footagehead buddy and they spend countless hours analyzing the incoming clips. There isn’t much known about him, except that he resides in Chicago, is fond of Cayce, and has a Progressive viewpoint.
He discusses the footage in the F:F:F and he emails Cayce for more elaborate analysis. As more clips are released he and fellow footagehead, Darryl, attempt to locate the creators. They come across Taki, a game designer, and create a fake female persona to attract him and extract the code which was found embedded in one of the clips. This passage is an email which Parkaboy sent to Cayce where he discusses, in depth, the watermarks which may have been embedded in other clips.
Parkaboy interacts with the footage because he is fascinated by its timelessness. This turns into somewhat of an obsession as his desire to find the creators grows. The prospect of eventually discovering the people who filmed it, and the reason why they released it, is what motivates him to continue. He doesn’t have an economic stake in this and is mainly driven by curiosity and the intellectual and artistic aspects.
The author of Media Unlimited, Todd Gitlin, would probably characterize “users” as people who search for “something we call fun, comfort, convenience, or pleasure…”(Gitlin 5) from the media. We see this in the character of Parkaboy because he is intrigued by the clips and spends his free time watching and analyzing them. Gitlin also states, “Even the quest for information includes the quest for the delight to be found in retrieving it, a quest, that is, for a feeling” (Gitlin 6). This is also evident in Parkaboy’s case because his quest to discover the meaning of the footage brings him a certain feeling of gratification. Every time he puts a piece of the puzzle together he is rewarded, even stating that he is “unhealthily excited” by their progress.

This quote is explaining that books, encyclopedias, and all other forms of text, is the most powerful way to get complicated information out to the public, and the best way for us to understand it too. This quote is also explaining that although written words, books is the best way to get this information out there, things like the internet, and the coming of age in this new “digital world” is helping to get the same information out there, but in a faster more precise way, hense “giving it a run for its money.”

As we see with new web sites like Wikipedia, it allows us to research broad topics, on whatever we want to research. This information is right at our finger tips, and is shown to us at the speed of light. Wikipedia is much faster at looking up information than a regular encyclopedia, or going to the library and searching through hundreds of books, when all you have to do is type a few keys and click the mouse.

“Convergence does not occur through media appliances, however sophisticated they may become. Convergence occurs within the brains of individual consumers and through their social interactions with others. (Jenkins 3) “

This quote is trying to explain to us that the interaction betwen people does not and can not give you that personal feeling, as it would if you were in person, although the technology we have now is sophisticated enough to talk to people from one country say to another. He is also trying to say that the consumers convergence(two things coming together) can only be reached in a face to face interaction. That although technology can help us talk to many people at once, you are really never going to get anywhere with them unless, you meet with them, and have personal contact.

This idea that Jenkins has also pertains to the ideas of online shopping. Before the internet people actually went to the department store, tried on clothes, or tested the products, ans interacted with the employees, or other shoppers asking for help or asking for an opinion, on an outfit or if the product they were buying worked well. Now with online shopping, you dont have direct contact with people, but you are indirectly trying to be influenced by the creators of the online shopping network, because they are always trying to get you to buy other things, via pop-ups and advertisement found on the page.

Media convergance, and culture convergence, “the shift by which culture operates, emphasizing the flow of contact across media channels.” This is so true in my everyday life, with my cell phone and I. We have this connection ever since we met, before the age of cell phone technology, the only way of communication was not through texting, or while driving, or while you were getting your nails done, you would have to call from a land line, a phone in your house that you could only go a few feet with. Cell phones have shaped the way i live, and breath and function in this world. i could never imagine walking around with one of those cell phones from the 80′s that were as big if not bigger, than the shoes on your feet. Now a days cell Phones including mine are as small and even as thin as a playing card. I find myself, listening to music, sending and recievng pictures, chating with friends and e-mailing my mom all at the same time. Cell phones these days are taking over the need for computers, i pods, and the last time i sent something in the mail was in the early 90′s, media has taken over not only my life, but the lives of everyone around me.
